Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about your Canada eTA

Clear, accurate answers to the questions travellers ask us most. Still unsure? Our team is one message away.

What is a Canada eTA?

An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is a digital entry requirement for visa-exempt travellers flying to Canada. It is linked electronically to your passport and stays valid for up to five years, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.

Do I really need an eTA to enter Canada?

If you are a citizen of a visa-exempt country and you are flying to Canada, yes, you need a valid eTA linked to your passport before you can board. You do not need one to arrive by car, bus, train or boat, and U.S. citizens are exempt. Travellers from visa-required countries need a visitor visa instead of an eTA.

When is the best time to apply?

Apply before you book or travel. Most eTAs are approved within minutes, but a small number take a few days if extra checks are needed, so it is best not to leave it to the last moment. Because an eTA stays valid for up to five years, applying early costs you nothing.

Which documents and details should I have ready?

Have your valid passport, an email address and a payment method ready. You will enter basic details such as your name, date and place of birth, address, nationality and passport number, and answer a few short background questions about your employment, funds and health or immigration history. Make sure every detail matches your passport exactly, as even a small typo can cause problems at the airport.

Does every member of my family need their own eTA?

Yes. Every traveller needs their own eTA tied to their own passport, including children and infants. For anyone under 18, a parent or legal guardian completes and submits the application on their behalf. Each application is separate, so several people cannot share one eTA.

Can I reuse my eTA for a future trip?

Yes. An eTA allows multiple visits and stays valid for up to five years, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. You only need a new one if you get a new passport, since the eTA is linked to the passport you applied with.

How long can I stay in Canada?

Most visitors can stay for up to six months. A border services officer decides the exact length of your stay when you arrive and may note a date in your passport. If you want to stay longer, apply to extend your stay at least 30 days before your authorized stay ends.

How long does processing take?

Many applications are approved within minutes. Some take longer, up to a few days, if additional information or review is required. If we or the authorities need anything further, you will be contacted by email with the next steps.

How is my approved eTA delivered?

Your eTA is linked electronically to your passport, and we email you a confirmation once your application has been reviewed and submitted. When you check in for your flight, the airline scans your passport to confirm the eTA is valid, so there is no paper document you must carry.

Which countries are eligible to apply?

Only citizens of visa-exempt countries can apply for an eTA. You can confirm your nationality in our eligibility section. If your country is not eligible, you will usually need to apply for a visitor visa instead, which is a different process.

Do age restrictions apply?

No. Travellers of all ages need an eTA, including babies and young children. A parent or guardian simply completes the application for any traveller under 18.

I spotted a mistake after submitting. What now?

Contact our support team as soon as you notice the error and send us the correct detail. As long as your travel date has not passed, we can usually help before you board. Important: if the information on your eTA does not match your passport, you may be delayed at check-in or asked to re-apply, so flag any mistake early.

I did not receive a confirmation email.

First, check your spam, junk or bulk-mail folder and mark our message as not spam so future emails get through. Also double-check that the email address you entered was spelled correctly. If you still cannot find it, contact our support team and we will help.

Are you the official government website?

No. This is an independent travel-assistance service and is not affiliated with the Government of Canada or any Canadian government agency. Travellers can apply for an eTA directly through the official Government of Canada website. Our fee is for the optional review, verification and support service we provide to help make your application accurate and stress-free.
