Canadian eTA Information

Everything you need to know about the Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) for Canada — who needs one, how long it lasts, and how to apply.

1. About eTA

Since March 15, 2016, all non-citizens require a visa or an Electronic Travel Authorisation to enter Canada. An eTA is an electronically stored authority for travel to Canada. All visa-exempt foreign nationals are expected to have an eTA to fly to or transit through Canada.

2. eTA Expiration

You can enter Canada as many times as you want for the duration of 5 years from the date your eTA is granted, or until the expiry date of your passport, whichever comes first.

5. eTA Application

To apply for an eTA, you must have your passport, an email address and a credit card to complete the online application.

The details you provide in your online eTA application need to be exactly the same as they appear in your passport, and you must travel using the same passport that is linked to your eTA application.

In your application you need to provide biographic information such as your name, date and place of birth, gender, marital status, address, nationality and passport number. You will also answer a few simple background questions — for example, about your current job, the funds available for your visit, and any medical issues.
